In the verses below, Lord Jesus is stressing the importance of doing the will of God. But, What is the WILL of God? It is nothing, but Unconditional Obedience to HIS Commandments.
We all have a certain way of thinking. We consider those who are related to us by blood as our relatives or brothers and sisters. However, Jesus has a different criterion for deciding who His mother, brother or sister is.
Though we have earthly parents, our relationship with them, from an eternal perspective, is temporary in nature, but our relationship with our Heavenly Father is permanent; it lasts for ever.
Though we are from different earthly families, we all belong to one Heavenly Family and we all have the same Heavenly father.
However, our relationship with our Heavenly Father is not determined by blood, but by obedience. Jesus, though, he was living an earthly life, had a heavenly thinking.
However, His earthly family members did not understand this higher reality. So, when they came looking for him, He used it as an occasion to teach the people around him about what actually determines their relationship with the God Almighty.
Those days or these days, believers always held to a thinking that their involvement in external religious acts and rituals determines their relationship with God, but that is not true. What God demands and expects from you is; unconditional obedience to HIS Commandments.
The following verse makes it crystal clear.
22 But Samuel replied:“Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord?. To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.(1 Samuel 15, 22 NIV)
If we look at the earthly life of Jesus Christ, we could find that, He lived in perfect obedience to His Father’s Commandments and He wants us to do the same without any excuse or compromise.
If you want Jesus Christ to treat you as His mother, brother or sister, you need to keep His Father’s Commandments. If we claim to be His disciples, then, we need to follow His example, there is no short cut for sure.
Of course, we, as human beings, sometimes fail, we disobey God. But HE is willing to Forgive us; the moment we step in to the throne of Grace with a heart of repentance, God forgives us in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness(1 John, 1, 9)
Obedience is the cornerstone of our relationship with Jesus Christ. No matter what great works we do for His kingdom, if there is no obedience in our personal lives, we are not going to be called “worthy disciples”.
See, what the Lord says to those who had been working for His kingdom but had been disregarding His commandments in their personal lives.
Many will say to Me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.’(Matthew 7:22-23 NASB)
Here, you might wonder what’s “practicing lawlessness”. Let us look at the following verses:
Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; and sin is lawlessness.(1 John 3:4 NASB)
The above verses makes it clear that, sin is nothing but disobeying God’s Laws or Commandments. The people mentioned in Mathew 7, 22-23 are guilty of just doing that.
Here, their hard work for the kingdom of God does not make them righteous before Jesus Christ. He does not consider them or treat them as His brothers or sisters, He plainly says: I Never Knew You.
In fact, These are not ordinary believers, they are the ones who worked for the kingdom of God without rest, they had the real anointing of God to perform miracles and to cast out demons. But still they were rejected by Christ because of their disobedience, because of their lawlessness, because of their rebellious heart.
Disobedience is nothing but rebellion and it separates us from God and His Eternal Love. So let us be the doers of the Word rather than hearers of the word.
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.(James,1, 22)
Please remember: beyond everything. our relationship with Jesus Christ depends on one very important thing: Obeying His Father’s Commandments and without Obedience we can not please Him.
