The Parable of the wheat and the Weed in the gospel of Matthew 13, gives us a wonderful picture of this world where good people (People of the Kingdom of God) and evil people (Those who belong to the kingdom of darkness) co-exist.
Sometimes, we, as believers wonder:
Why they co-exist with us? Why the God Almighty is not getting rid of them from this world?
Yes, in this parable itself there is an answer for these two questions.
Sometimes, when we see the magnitude of evil going on in this contemporary world, we feel like nobody is in control. It seems like the evil ones are free to do whatever they want.
In fact, this is not true, God Almighty is in perfect control and nothing happens out of His knowledge and Will.
The only reason we don’t see God behaving the way we expect, is because; He is patient. He is patient so that, those who are committing evil can have the chance to repent and walk away from the Kingdom of darkness and enter into the kingdom of God.
Next, let us analyze some of the important points contained in The parable of the Wheat and the Weed.
24 Jesus told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. 25 But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.
26 When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared. 27“The owner’s servants came to him and said, ‘Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?’
28“ ‘An enemy did this,’ he replied. “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and pull them up?’
29“ ‘No,’ he answered, ‘because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.’” (Matthew 13, 24-30)
According to this parable, the Kingdom of God is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. But while everyone was sleeping the enemy came and sowed weed among the wheat. Later, both the wheat and the weed started sprouting and growing together.
But, the owner of the field is not in a hurry to remove the weeds, he decides to wait until the harvest.
In this parable of the Wheat and the Weed:
the field is the World and the owner is the Son of Man (Jesus Christ). The enemy is the Devil or the Evil One.
Here, we see two types of seeds are being sown: one is Wheat and the other is Weed.
The Wheat is sown by the Son of Man (Jesus Christ) and the Weed by the Evil one, the Devil.
The good seeds are the good news about the kingdom of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ that brings salvation to everyone who believes in The Son of God.
Many people hear and believe in it and become the citizens of the kingdom of God and they are represented by the Wheat in this parable.
However, the seeds of the weed are the ideologies and religious systems of this world that corrupt the minds of the people and convert them into weeds or the citizens of the kingdom of the Evil One.
In other words: the weeds are the people who believe in the political, religious and social systems of this world and live according to what these systems teach.
In their lives there is no room for the righteousness of God. They live by what they believe and there is no absolute truth according to them.
For these weeds, everything begins in this world and ends in this world; there is nothing beyond the grave. The enemy has blinded them, so that, they are unable to see the real truth.
These people are guided by soul-destructing religious and socio-political ideologies that they believe in. But, they still find nothing wrong with their lives; everything appears to be good.
Their life is smooth and colourful. They live in prosperity and enjoy abundance and this makes them even think that, they are on the right path.
Here, we see the Weed flourishing and growing well in the field along with the Wheat.
However, the truth is: The owner of the field is waiting for the harvest time to uproot and bundle them separately in order to burn them in the fire. This is the reality, but unfortunately, the Weeds do not know about this, but we, the believers, know it and the Word of God also confirms it.
Anyway, God Almighty is still merciful; he is not up-rooting them or destroying them instantly. Instead, he waits and still waiting for them to renounce their evil way of life and return to the Path of truth. He wants every one of them to come to the saving knowledge of Christ.
This is good news for us, believers, because, this gives us the opportunity to preach the gospel to these perishing souls.
Remember, these people are not strangers; they are our own flesh and blood, they are our own friends and colleagues.
So, we need to be praying for them and sharing the good news with them; so that, they too have an opportunity to hear the Gospel of Jesus Christ and be saved.
Of course, the task is not easy and the Work is plenty. therefore, we need to pray to the LORD of the harvest to send workers in to the field.
Well, I think I have already covered a couple of important points in this article (The Parable of the Wheat and the Weed) and I am sure, it will be a blessing for you in your Christian Walk,
