The Laws of the LORD is Perfect – Yes, they are perfect; because they manifest the perfect nature of an infinitely holy God. God is holy and His laws are holy. They reflect the very nature of God; they reveal what God likes and what He dislikes. When He says – You shall not commit adultery – it means He hates adultery.
The Word of God says – God created man in His own image and likeness – that means; we are His children and His very nature indwells in us through Christ. Therefore, we need to love what He loves and hate what He hates and live in obedience to His Commandments. This is the perfect will of our Heavenly Father.
David realized this truth in his life and he chose to live in obedience to God’s Commandments and this obedience brought David closer to God – Closer to a level that – God calls him “A man after My own heart.” No one in the Bible, we see getting this title except David.
Next, let us examine some of the verses from Psalm 19.
7The law of the Lord is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple. 8The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
9The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the Lord are firm, and all of them are righteous. 10They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb. 11By them your servant is warned; in keeping them there is great reward. (Psalm 19, 7-11)
Yes, in verse 7 David says the Law of the LORD is Perfect and refreshing to the soul. As you know, David is writing these words from his own experience with God’s Laws and he really tasted their goodness and sweetness in his life. He loved them, meditated on them and lived by them.
Every word he spoke and every action he took were guided by them. As a result, David was able to live a life that was pleasing to God. His integrity of heart and uprightness were the result of keeping God’s Laws diligently. The Laws of God were the mirror through which David saw himself. They guided him throughout his whole life. Those Laws helped David to know what pleases and displeases God and they warned him when he deviated from the right path.
In verse 8 David says – the percepts of the LORD are right and they bring joy to the heart; and Commands of the LORD are radiant; giving light to the eyes. Yes, when you have the true light in your eyes you will see clearly the difference between good and evil; you will recognize the evil paths straight away. You will not stumble in your spiritual walk as your inner eyes are lit up by the righteous Laws of God. Also, your obedience helps the Holy Spirit to dwell in you and guide you.
In verse 9 David says – Fear of the LORD is pure and it endures forever. If we go little deeper into these words, we could find that – David had the fear of the LORD in his heart and this holy fear, (fear out of love and reverence) was the main reason for David diligently following the percepts of the LORD.
Again, in verse 10 David says – God’s Laws are more precious than gold and they are sweeter than honey, honey from the honeycomb. Here, David compares the value of God’s laws with the most valuable precious metal in the world and realizes that; it is more valuable than gold.
That means, even if you offer a ton of gold; you won’t be successful in persuading David to disobey God’s Laws, because, from his experience he learned that – obedience brings far greater blessings into his life; blessings that are more valuable than gold.
Again, David, compares God’s laws with pure honey and says – they are sweeter than honey. That means; David found obeying God’s Laws a pure enjoyment; the more he obeyed, the more he enjoyed.
Actually, obedience created a very sweet relationship between David and God and he enjoyed that relationship. Obeying God’s Laws was the most joyful thing for David; he did not consider God’s Laws as a burden like we, Christians do. For David, keeping God’s Laws provided an opportunity to manifest his love for God.
However, the experience of many born-again believers is quite different from that of David. They consider the Laws of God as imperfect. They think, it is their faith in Christ that make them righteous before God and not the Law; so, there is no need to keep the Law.
Yes, it is true that – You have been saved by grace through faith in Christ. But does that exempt you from obeying God’s Commandments? Does salvation by grace through faith gives you the right to live in disobedience?
In John 14 Lord Jesus says:
Saints, please read the above verse carefully, the very own words of Lord Jesus – What did He say:
“Whoever has My Commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me”. The proof is in the pudding. Your love for your Master is measured by your obedience to His commandments; nothing else. If someone has taught you otherwise, he is a False Teacher. You cannot please Lord Jesus by your Sunday rituals; for that, you need to love Him and obey Him. There is only one way to manifest your love for Jesus; that is through obedience – by obeying His Commandments.
Again, in Acts 5 the Word of God says: The Holy Spirit is given to those who Obey God. That means God will not give you His holy Spirit if you are living in disobedience.
Next, see what Apostle Paul says in Romans 8.
Yes, those who live in disobedience are the ones who walk according to the desires of the flesh. A heart occupied by the desires of the flesh is hostile to God and it cannot submit itself to God’s Laws. Unfortunately, many of the believers falls in this category; they still walk in darkness while claiming to have light. They have a form of Godliness but deny its power. They play church and think they are born-again.
Saints, there are a lot of Preachers and Pastors out there who promote disobedience from the pulpit. They demand tithe from the pulpit but they don’t demand obedience to God’s Commandments.
In fact, many of the Western Liberal Evangelical churches have already stopped preaching or discussing about obedience; they never even mention about God’s Laws in any of their conversations.
Saints, God’s Laws are Perfect, they are Holy, Righteous and Eternal. Heaven and earth will pass away but God’s Holy Laws will not pass away. Your Relationship with Christ is built on unconditional obedience to His Commandments and nothing else. That is why Lord Jesus said: If you love Me, keep My Commandments.
