Prayer is the most unique form of communication that is available to mankind, and it has certain essential characteristics, six of which, I will be discussing in this short article.
Through prayer, we have the privilege to get in touch with the Throne of Grace in Heaven. In addition, Prayer is the only form of communication in this universe that has free access to the throne of God Almighty.
So, prayer is important and let us look at six of its most essential characteristics.
1.Prayer is personal.
Prayer is a two-way communication between you and your Heavenly Father. It is the time that you spend in the presence of God Almighty. Hence, it is your duty to keep this line of communication always active.
Of course, others can intercede for you in situations of emergency, but they cannot replace you. So, you should set apart a certain time of the day to communicate with your Heavenly Father.
The more you communicate, the more closeness you will feel to God Almighty, which in turn, will allow HIM to work in your life in more unique ways.
2.Prayer should be in Secret.
When you are having a personal communication with your Heavenly Father, others should not be around; because, they could distract you from listening or speaking to HIM.
In addition, when other people are around, you might lose the freedom to talk with God more freely. You may feel a bit reluctant to open your heart to your Heavenly Father in the presence of others.
If we examine the prayer life of Jesus, we could find that, He always prayed by himself. When it’s time for prayer, He would move away to a lonely place, where, no one is around.
When disciples asked Jesus about “how to pray” what did he advise them?
5“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Mathew 6, 5-6)
3.Prayer is a Sweet Incense offered at the Altar in Heaven.
Prayer is a sweet incense offered by Saints before the Alter in Heaven. Every word we use in prayer is converted into a sweet aroma when it reaches heaven. So, we need to have a pure, clean heart when we go before the LORD Almighty in prayer. See what the Bible says about prayer.
7He went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who sat on the throne. 8And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God’s people.(Revelation 5, 7-8)
4.prayer should be short and not long babbling.
Your prayer should be short. For God to answer your prayer, it doesn’t have to be long. Short prayers receive equal attention as long prayers. So, you don’t need to keep repeating the same thing for a long duration of time to receive an answer. See what Jesus says about this.
7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. (Mathew 6, 7–8)
Therefore, let your prayers be short and simple. Follow the advice of Jesus Christ and pray with confidence.
Please, remember, you are praying before your Heavenly Father who knows your needs better than anybody else under the sun.
5.prayer should have an appointed time.
Yes, this is an important factor that you need to keep in mind always. It is of paramount importance for you to have a fixed time of the day to go before the LORD Almighty in prayer.
If possible, let it be at night, or early in the morning, especially between 4 and 6 am. Before you begin your daily chores; if you could pray, that will definitely help you finish the tasks of the day more easily.
Moreover, if you could seek HIS face before you begin your day, it will surely bring a double portion of blessings in your life. therefore, make sure you have a fixed time of the day for your daily prayer.
6.Prayer should be according to the Will of God.
This is of course another very important factor that you have to take into consideration when you pray. Let your prayers be according to God’s will and not according to your will.
Pray for the things that are more relevant to the kingdom of God. Of course, there are things that are important for your personal life too.
But remember, your Heavenly Father knows you need those things and HE will provide them at the right time.
The Word says: “first you seek HIS kingdom and HIS righteousness and all other thing will be added unto you”. Amen
