In this short article I am going to talk about “Seven Essential Rules for Christian Businessmen”. I chose this topic based on my experience with Christian Businessmen in my Fellowship, most of whom are really struggling to sustain their businesses.
These Businessmen are really smart and hard-working with all the skills and talents required to make a Business highly successful. However, on the ground, the story is different. They can’t find enough money to make both ends meet. They seem to be in some kind of crisis without any obvious reasons.
Whenever I listen to them, I feel like something is missing in their life that is hindering their progress. However, this missing part seems not physical but spiritual.
In order to pinpoint this missing spiritual aspect, I am laying out seven rules for them to follow and I hope it will help them to figure out the problems and plug the holes.
Honesty is the most important virtue that Christian Businessmen should cultivate in their daily life. Jesus Said:
I am the way, the truth and the life.
If you believe in Jesus, if you are a disciple of Jesus who is the embodiment of “truth” and if HE lives in you, how can you be dishonest in your business dealings?
As a disciple of Christ, you need to be honest with your customers, clients, suppliers, staff and Business Associates, you also need to be honest with your Tax returns.
If your heart is dishonest, then, the Holy Spirit is not going work in your life and it is going to be a big hindrance to the growth of your business.
Now you might want to repeat the common saying:
Oh! “We need to be a bit dishonest in business”
It is not true, I don’t believe it, I know businessmen who are honest and still they do their business very successfully.
I know businessmen who never cheats on the tax even a dime and still their businesses never stop growing.
These honest businessmen seldom experience a crisis period, because they operate by the rules of Heaven where there is no economic crisis.
Please remember, God Almighty hates lying lips: See what the word says:
Your primary calling is to be a witness of Christ in the Business that you are doing. When you lie before the gentiles, you are profaning the name of Jesus Christ.
When you honour the name of the LORD Almighty, he will honour your name too. He will make sure you lack nothing. So diligently practice honesty in your business dealings.
2. Make Decisions on the basis of; how it will benefit the Kingdom of God
As a believer in Christ, the primary purpose of your calling is to: seek “His Kingdom and His Righteousness” first.
Your calling is to be a witness for Him in whatever areas He has placed you.
As a Businessman you might be making decisions on a daily basis, but how many of these decisions are just and right in the eyes of the LORD?
Do these decisions benefit the Kingdom of God? You need to examine yourself and make corrections if required.
3.Avoid Business Partnership with unbelievers
This is another area that believers need to be very careful about.
When you start a Business, do not partner with unbelievers. If it is in your capacity to avoid, please avoid them. Because, the unbelief of a gentile partner can be a hindrance to your prosperity.
Furthermore, it will also stand in the way of you practicing your faith in your business. See what Apostle Paul says:
14Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? 15What harmony is there between Christ and Belial ? Or what does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? 16What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said:
“I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 17Therefore, “Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you.” (2Corinthians 6, 14-17)
A couple of years ago, I tried several times to start business partnerships with my friends who are not believers. But nothing worked out very well and finally I had to give up.
If possible, try to do business on your own and the LORD Almighty will bless you.
4.Take a Reasonable Profit
There is nothing in this world as powerful as money that can make people be blind towards the truth.
Businessmen always have a tendency to make maximum profit from a transaction. But Christians should not behave like the gentiles. Take a reasonable profit. Just because there is an opportunity; it does not mean that you should exploit it to the maximum.
There are businessmen who buy a product from China for 5 RMB and sell in their home country for 5 USD. This is unreasonable.
We worship a God who is Righteous and we need to do what is just and right in the eyes of the LORD.
If you make unreasonable profit from a business transaction, the excess money will be stolen by the enemy through some other means. So be fair in your transactions. So that, the LORD will multiply the fruits of your labour.
5.Pay your employees what they deserve and also On Time.
This is another area that many of the Christian businessmen fail. We go to church and talk about how to be righteous; but, in our own personal lives, we don’t practice what we preach in the church.
When it comes to paying employees, many people are very reluctant. In fact, this is a very serious offence in the eyes of the LORD.
If you exploit your workers by not paying them what they deserve, the money you make will fly away from your hands like a bird.
I am sharing this from my own experience. So Please, avoid this mistake. If you bless your workers, God Almighty will bless your labour. See what the Word says about this.
14Do not take advantage of a hired worker who is poor and needy, whether that worker is a fellow Israelite or a foreigner residing in one of your towns. 15Pay them their wages each day before sunset, because they are poor and are counting on it. Otherwise they may cry to the Lord against you, and you will be guilty of sin. (Deuteronomy 24, 14-15)
6.Give your tithe on time
Honor God with the first fruits of your labour. Give your tithe on time. When you eat the tithe, you are robbing God. See what the Word says:
8“Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me. “But you ask, ‘How are we robbing you?’“In tithes and offerings. 9You are under a curse—your whole nation—because you are robbing me. 10Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the Lord Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. 11I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not drop their fruit before it is ripe,” says the Lord Almighty. 12“Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land,” says the Lord Almighty.(Malachi 3, 8-12)
Yes, the above verses very clearly tell the whole story. As a Christian businessman, you are supposed to pay your tithe on time. Tithe is the seed and when you eat that seed you don’t have the chance to reap a harvest.
Do not think that it is an old testament law. See what Jesus says about giving tithe.
23“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices—mint, dill and cumin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have practiced the latter, without neglecting the former. 24You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. (Mathew 23, 23-24)
Here, Jesus advises the Pharisees to give tithe while not ignoring the weightier matters of the law which are Justice, mercy and faithfulness.
Those days, the Pharisees were very diligent in giving tithe, but they were not kind, or merciful to their fellow Israelites.
Jesus wanted them to practice the latter (Justice, mercy and faithfulness) without ignoring the former(tithe)
So, it is evident from the above verses that Jesus commands us to pay tithe.
Similarly, when you go to church on Sunday, please honor God with the biggest bill in your wallet and not the smallest one. Be generous towards the Offering box.
7.Remember to keep the Sabbath Day Holy.
This is the Fourth Commandment among the 10 Commandments written in our hearts.
But the new covenant believers live as if this commandment does not exist. I call this “The sweetest Commandment”.
God Almighty established the Sabbath in the Garden of Eden. But we are not willing to accept it, we think it is too old.
God Almighty wants us to rest on His Holy day by abstaining from our routine work, he even commands rest for every one in our household, including animals who work in the field.
If you have workers working on Saturdays, please try to give them the day off. By doing this you are honoring God. And surely God will bless you for honoring HIM. And He will give you a double portion of blessings for one day’s labour that you are sacrificing.
Please, do not use lame excuses to deny rest for your workers. Of course, if you are in any type of business that are considered as essential services like food, or medical care, then keeping the Sabbath won’t be easy.
Anyway, pray about it and LORD will provide a way for you to honor HIM by keeping the Sabbath day (seventh day of the week, not the first day of the week) holy.
Well, these are just a few of the Rules that I wish every Christian businessman could follow in their lives.
I am sure; examining them prayerfully and practicing them diligently, will definitely bless you and your business.
In addition, it will also change the complete nature of your business; LORD Almighty will take your business from the realm of scarcity to the realm of abundance, and it will shut the door on the face of the locusts that are eating away the fruits of your labour. Amen.
