No One Can Serve Two Masters

13“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” (Luke 16, 13)

Yes, Lord Jesus is right in saying that – No one can serve two Masters;

Either you will hate the one and love the other or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. Even if someone says that he could serve two Masters with full devotion; it won’t be true. Because, serving your Master requires complete devotion and full loyalty without which the one serving will find it difficult to be a true servant.

However, despite the impossibility, there are many who try to serve two masters at the same time by dividing their loyalty between the two; unfortunately, they will find it difficult to gain the trust of both the Masters; because; both demands complete loyalty and when that is absent; both thinks, the servant is unfaithful. So, serving two Masters at the same time is not possible and attempting to do so will result in losing the Position.

Nevertheless, there are many in the Christian world who think; they can serve two Masters. But, Jesus; whom these Christians call “Lord” has very categorically declared in His Word that:

His disciples could not serve two Masters – God and Money.

Of course, it is impossible; because the Word of God says: Love the LORD your God with all Your heart, with all your Soul and with all your Strength.

4Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. a 5Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.( Deuteronomy 6, 4).

As a disciple of Christ; if you love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your strength, then, why do you break His Commandments to get rich? You are devoted to who? God or Mammon?

Remember, the God of Israel is a jealous God and He does not like His children worshipping any other Gods in their hearts. If you are loving the LORD your God with all your heart, then, there should not be any room in your heart for other masters.

Unfortunately, Liberal Evangelical Christianity do not mind Christians loving both God and money at the same time. In fact, they even encourage believers to gain riches in this world; as they think, getting rich is the best proof of God’s blessings in one’s life. Moreover, they even use scriptures to justify what they believe.

However, this was not the case in the early church. Those days, when people became believers in Christ, they completely lost their passion and love for the things of this world. They lost their appetite for money, power and fame. They emptied their hearts of their love for the glorious things of this perishable world. They found the treasures of this world to be meaningless. They got rid of all the junk in their hearts and homes. If you want evidence read the verses below:

 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. (Acts 2, 44)

What they did? They sold all their property and possessions and gave to anyone who had a need. They had everything in common. Now, they found their true Master and decides to love Him with all their hearts. As apostle Paul says: they found all the riches of this world to be just rubbish compared to the eternal treasures they inherited through their faith in Christ.  Apostle Paul also had the same experience.

8What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ (Philippians 3, 8)

This inner realization is the result of a genuine conversion; unfortunately, this is not true for majority of the Born-again believers in Christ. They claim to be born-again but do not manifest any evidence of that re-birth. They still love the world and its riches. Even after becoming Christians:

  • They still cheat their business partners for money.
  • They still compete and destroy their competitors for money.
  • They still compete in their work places for more money and more benefits.
  • They still choose the smallest bills from their wallets to put in to the offering boxes in the church.
  • They still save in the banks for their posterities even up to the fourth generation.

Saints, I am not against Christians making money or getting rich. But it should be done in way that brings glory to God. Yes, you will do it in a way that brings Glory to God, when, you love the LORD your God more than money. On the contrary, if you love money more than God; then, you won’t care what Commandments you break in order to make money.

If bringing Glory to God is your goal; then:

  • you will not cheat your business partner;
  • you will not take a 200% profit from your sales;
  • you will not keep in your wallet the 10% tithe that belongs to the House of God.
  • You will not take bribes under the table.
  • You will not back-bite your colleague in order to please your boss and get a pay rise.
  • You will not under-pay your staff or withhold their benefits.

Yes, your heart will be where your treasure is. If your treasure is in this world, you will let your heart rest on the riches of this world; you will do everything to please the God of this world; the Mammon.

However, if you believe that your true treasure is in Heaven, then, your heart will rest on the things of Heaven; You will love the LORD your God with all your heart. Also, you will do everything to please the God of Heaven rather than pleasing the god of this world.

Saints, if you are a born – again believer who still loves the world and its riches; if you have an unquenchable passion to make money by compromising the Commandments of God; then, you need to really examine your faith. You need to find where your true loyalty is; who you are really serving – is it money or God?

Remember, you can hide a divided heart from the world; from your fellow Christians; but you cannot hide it from the eyes of Christ. So, it is better to repent and turn away from the things that lead you into worshipping Mammon and get right with God. Saints, I don’t discourage Christians from making money or becoming rich. But I am against Christians loving money and breaking God’s Commandments to make money; because, the Word of God says:

Love of money is the root of all evil.

10For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy, 6, 10)

Saints, most of the strife, tension, discord, division and in-fighting that we see in the contemporary church is the result of Christians loving Mammon more than God. If the true believers in Christ followed the examples of early church; Christian homes and churches of today would have become a true place of refuge for the helpless and hopeless of this world.

Unfortunately, this is not happening, because, majority of the believers are also competing with the unbelievers for amassing wealth. Also, Christians hoard way more than they need; in their eyes; they are more blessed when they receive than when they give and as a result they hesitate to give, they are reluctant to share. They, think: oh! It is all for me and my kids!

Another very important point to keep in mind is: As believers in Christ, we need to have a heart that is filled with contentment. In fact, contentment is a fruit that Christians should bear naturally, but many of the Christians do not even think about it, let alone praying for it.

As Apostle Paul says in the verses below; those who want to get rich fall into all kinds of temptation and trap themselves into many harmful desires that eventually lead them into the path of eternal destruction.

6But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. 9Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. (1 Timothy 6, 6-9)

Saints; remember, Money is a good Servant but a bad Master.

Once you let money become your Master; he will compel you to do things that you never ever imagined in your life. Most of the evil that we see under the sun is the result of people loving money and letting money be their Master. Therefore, we believers in Christ, need to stop letting Mammon being the Master of our lives; so that we can live a life that brings glory to God.

As the Word of God says: Do not wear yourselves out for riches. Because, they will not last long. One day you will find them flying away from your wallets and your bank accounts.

4Do not wear yourself out to get rich; do not trust your own cleverness. 5Cast but a glance at riches, and they are gone, for they will surely sprout wings and fly off to the sky like an eagle.(Proverbs 23, 4-5)

Stay Blessed
