13“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.( Matthew 7, 13-14)
The above verses are part of the Sermon on the Mount and as you see, in these verses Lord Jesus is depicting the picture of two roads that two groups of people are taking in order to reach their destination – Heaven, the home of Eternal Life.
As is evident in the above verses both the groups believe; the road they are taking will lead them to their destination. However, in reality, only one road leads to the real destination: Heaven – and that is only the narrow road.
As I mentioned earlier these two groups are taking two different roads to reach the same destination. However, from the words of Lord Jesus it is clear that only one road leads to “Eternal life” that is the narrow road; while the broad road leads to eternal destruction and damnation.
Unfortunately, the people travelling on the broad road do not understand this truth. They, think the road that they are taking will eventually lead them to eternal life.
So, here; there is a question; that is – why many are taking this broad road in order to gain eternal life?
The reason is: the broad road is well paved and it cost nothing to take this road. Absolutely there is no cost whatsoever involved in travelling through this road.
There is no need for those who take this road to relinquish anything in this life. They can still continue to live their sinful life happily. They can love the world and live like the world without any hindrance. They do not need to sacrifice anything for the Kingdom of God.
They do not need to expose themselves to persecution or suffering. They do not have a cross to carry while following Christ. Also, on the broad road, there is no need for them to live by the Word of God, instead they could live by their own words.
But What did Lord Jesus say about these people who travel on the broad road?
He; very categorically, declared in the above verses that those who take the Broad road will not gain life as it leads only to destruction.
The broad road is not the road that the LORD has laid out for His children to travel through in order to reach where He dwells.
On the contrary, the road that the LORD has set out for His children is the narrow road and those who live by the Word of God travel through it and reach their heavenly home.
Well, what are the Characteristics of this narrow road? First of all; this road is really very narrow. Taking this road is like travelling by the side of a cliff surrounded by huge mountains. Each and every hour of the journey requires special care and attention.
Those who take this road go through lots of hardships and sufferings. They are often persecuted by the enemies of the cross. also, they have to relinquish everything that they love in this world.
They cannot talk like the world or walk like the world and also, they do not own anything in this world or love anything that belongs to this world.
They live like strangers and aliens in this world. They do not find any joy in the pleasures of this world. The Hollywood and Bollywood movies do not entertain them anymore.
In the eyes of the world; they are losers and they love to be losers for the sake of the Kingdom of God.
Well, by now you might have got some clue about who these people are. They are the true children of God; the true disciples of Christ who is carrying their cross and following Him.
Saints; if you look around, you will find two groups of Christians in the midst of you; one living like the world while claiming to be the disciples of Christ and the other living by the Word of God and seeking the will of God in everything they do.
Unfortunately, the ones that belong to the former category are many while the ones that belong to the latter category are few and that is why Lord Jesus says:
Small is the Gate and narrow is the Road that leads to Eternal Life and only a few find it.
Saints; the real walk with Christ is through a narrow road; you might wonder why I say this. You might think this is quite different from what many of your Pastors and Preachers have taught you.
Many of you might have come to faith in Christ expecting a broad road to heaven; a road that is free from difficulties and challenges; a road paved with all good things in life; but that is not true.
Remember; Christ did not promise us a comfortable life in this world; He did not promise us riches and glory in this world. Instead he said:
Yes, you will have trouble in this world and He also warns His disciples about this while sending them two by two to preach the Good News of the Kingdom of God.
16“I am sending you out like sheep among wolves. Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves. 17Be on your guard; you will be handed over to the local councils and be flogged in the synagogues.
18On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles.
19But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, 20for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21“Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child; children will rebel against their parents and have them put to death.
22You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.
Saints; if you believe that you are a true disciple of Christ; then, your journey in this world have to be through the Narrow Road that Christ described and you absolutely have no choice in this matter.
Your journey through this narrow Road begins as soon as you profess your faith in Christ and accept Him as your Lord and Savior.
And throughout this journey; from the beginning till the end, you will face many challenges and these challenges might appear in different forms.
They can be tests and temptations thrown at you by the enemy in the spiritual realm; they can be sicknesses or financial difficulties; they can also be trouble or persecution from the people around you including your own family members and friends.
Once you become a new creation in Christ; then, you are not going to look like the world or live like the world. There will be an obvious difference in everything you do and this difference will prompt the world to treat you different from the way it treats its own kind.
Consequently, many times you will be hated by the world but you should not feel surprised; remember the words of our Lord Jesus: if they hated me; they will hate you too.
18“If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. 19If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. 20Remember what I told you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. (John 15, 18-20).
Unfortunately, many of the believers in Christ cannot accept this reality and consequently when difficulties arise in their spiritual journey, they either give up their faith or move into the broad road that leads to destruction.
Saints; as children of God, we are called to journey through the narrow road and enter through the narrow gate. But, on the contrary, if you choose the broad road you will not reach your destination.
Of course, when you look at the broad road you might find many on it which may encourage you to follow them. But ultimately you will miss your destination.
Saints; please remember – walking with Christ requires giving up the world; you cannot walk with Him while loving the world. Faith in Christ is a lot more than simply saying “Jesus is my Lord and Savior” It requires saying no to the pleasures of this world and living by the Word of God.
